Since working on a low impact development plan for the CRWA a few weeks ago, I've been inspired to pore over old reports by the CRWA and others that plan past just stormwater management, to look at urban and community renewal. I've become especially interested in the Boston Complete Streets program, which is an integrated urban planning project to put pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists on equal footing. The plans go deeper to create more greenspace and narrower streets, promoting groudwater infiltration and natural filtration and cutting down on polluted stormwater runoff. These organized efforts promote healthy habits and make it safer for everyone to use and enjoy Boston's streets. As a frequent cyclist and part time water modeler, I really like these ideas. After spending the morning driving up and down and every which way on Memorial and Storrow Drive in an effort to stop at all the boathouses in the Lower Charles to pick up the flags, I would definitely love to see more efforts to reorganize streets int the Charles River Watershed.
