Meet the Critters of the Charles: The Atlantic Sturgeon

Take a look at this beast of a fish:

Man, is this guy weird looking. Image from here.

This is the Atlantic Sturgeon, a native to the Charles River. These giants grow to be between 4 to 6 feet long, and have been around since the Cretaceous period. That’s over 120 million years ago! These fish are born in the river, live in the ocean, and return to the river to die.

You probably haven’t seen this fellow in the Charles River though. Or if you have, you are very lucky! The Atlantic Sturgeon is endangered, and was actually thought to be gone from the river--that is until a man walking along the Charles spotted this guy in February of this year:

A man took this photo with his phone! Image from CBS Boston.

Many factors affected these fish, such as dam creation, which hindered their ability to reach the ocean, as well as pollution of the river. However, the river quality has improved greatly, and the sighting of these magnificent dinosaurs is a very good sign for the health of the Charles!

Welcome back, Sturgeons! For more information, check out this link:

Until next time,
Meghan
