Today I attended a municipal staff training on phosphate reduction in Newton, which was conducted today by CRWA and the city of Newton Department of Public Works. One part of this project focuses on phosphate reduction by promoting phosphate free fertilizer. The other major part focuses on enhancing DPW facilities. The training was very interesting and gave some great ideas to the attendees. Isn't it interesting that you can help improve the Charles River water quality just by reducing the phosphate in your routine garden fertilizer? This is a useful approach because phosphate removal from water and wastewater is more expensive and difficult compared to reducing the sources of phosphate, like fertilizers. Instead of a costly project, we could actually save money by not paying for phosphate from very beginning! Although I have now attended this training in various cities and each time it contains same agenda, I always learn new things from each session because the discussions after each session between CRWA and attendees always brings up new ideas and gives us wider view! It is great to see people more informed and empowered after the training!
