To dredge or not to dredge...

As boaters take off from the Community Rowing Center at Nonantum road they must row cautiously through the shallow portions of the river before they reach the Arsenal Street Bridge. If they do not watch out, they may run aground on several shallow sandbars that have become a nuisance for boaters in recent years. These sandbars can even become visible if the river flow slows enough during periods without rain. It has become such a problem that people believe something should be done about it.

CRWA has been contacted to look into the possibility of dredging the shallow areas in order to allow safe passage through the entire expanse of the river. Today I analyzed sediment data on this particular expanse of the river, from the Watertown dam to the Arsenal street bridge, to determine the feasibility of dredging the sediment and moving it to a landfill. If the sediment composition is deemed a biohazard it must be treated accordingly and the dredging process will become much more difficult to carry out.
