Meet the Critters of the Charles: the Great Blue Heron

Many of you can probably already identify this majestic bird of the Charles:
the Great Blue Heron

(from wikipedia)
Here's some information you probably didn't know! Great blue herons (Ardea herodias) have a range that spans across most of the United States - including Massachusetts - year round. They are the largest of the North American herons with long legs and dagger-like beaks. What separates herons from similar species, such as the crane, is their ability to retract and extend their neck, allowing their necks curl into an "S" shape when they fly.

Stay curious!
