Building Boston and Making Land

Here’s an interesting piece of knowledge for all those who aren't familiar with the city of Boston. A large proportion of the area that makes up the city of Boston used to be water! The land did not actually exist until the late 1800’s, when the sea was literally “filled in”.

Image from this blog.
This photo here shows what the land looked like in 1630, compared to what it looked like in 1995. See how much land was created?!

Of course this did come with some environmental concerns for the Charles River and the Boston Harbor watersheds, such as shoreline habitat destruction, increased storm runoff, and pollution. But can you imagine what Boston would look like today without it? Just something to ponder the next time you’re walking about downtown and standing on land that is entirely man-made.

Until next time!
